A carefully researched and evaluated health and wellness program can lift the spirits of residents and staff alike, writes Dean Gemmill.

A Bird's Eye View

Maryville Aged Care Hostel, in the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges in Victoria, has established the country's first bird watchers' club in an aged care facility, in conjunction with the Bird Observers Club of Australia.

How do I know if my relative is eligible for admission into a Nursing Home or Hostel?

The Residential Aged Care industry is strictly controlled and regulated by the Australian (Commonwealth) Government.
All residents in High Care (Nursing Homes) or Low Care (Hostels) must have Australian Government approval. This approval is only obtained through the local Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT). These teams are normally part of the Social Work Department of your local public hospital.

A member of an ACAT will visit your relative/ friend to assess whether it is appropriate for that person to enter a High Care, Low Care, Dementia specific facility, or in fact, stay in the home via other means of assistance. We cannot admit any resident without this assessment being completed.

Residential care is available for frail older people who can no longer live at home and who have been assessed by an Aged Care Assessment Team as needing such care.  Good Shepherd Aged Services provides residential care in either nursing home (high level care) or hostel (low level care).
