A carefully researched and evaluated health and wellness program can lift the spirits of residents and staff alike, writes Dean Gemmill.

A Bird's Eye View

Maryville Aged Care Hostel, in the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges in Victoria, has established the country's first bird watchers' club in an aged care facility, in conjunction with the Bird Observers Club of Australia.

What can residents bring with them?

This depends on whether the resident is moving into Low Care or High Care.

Low Care residents are more mobile and independent therefore their needs will be different to the High Care residents. Check with each facility, they will have information available for you. Whether you live in a High or Low Care facility all clothing must be name labelled. Good Shepherd Aged Services can facilitate the labelling of clothing.

All Electrical goods including any personal items (e.g. shavers, hair dryers) brought in by residents must be tested and tagged as having been inspected by a qualified person at Good Shepherd Aged Services. These items are inspected by Good Shepherd Aged Services annually as per organisational policy.

Your hostel or nursing home room is your own private living area.  Residents and relatives/friends are encouraged to personalize the room by adding your own furniture where possible, photographs, pictures and ornaments.
